To access the admin pages used for specifying Mailman mailing list options, please visit the following URL, substituting your list name for "list-name":

https://netmusician.org/mailman/admin/list-name/

Within the admin interface, there is a rather extensive (perhaps overwhelming) set of options. While Mailman's extensive feature set provides for a lot of flexibility, for sending out "one-way" mailings (i.e. prohibiting list members to address the list themselves), several options can be safely ignored.

Of the sections and options available, the following are most relevant for this sort of usage:

Contents

General Options

  • Real Name: this should not be changed, changing this does not change the address used to send mail to your list
  • Owner: should be a valid email address
  • Subject prefix: this optional setting will automatically attach a prefix to the subjects of all emails sent to your list. For example: [my-announcements] tour dates posted
  • Optional: welcome/goodbye messages

Passwords

This section allows the list owner to change his/her password used for accessing the admin section.

Membership Management

  • Mass Subscription (for adding list members in bulk - be sure to set the Send welcome messages to new subscribees? option to "No" if you wish to subscribe members silently without them receiving a notification, note that any email address duplicates will not be added to the list twice, and you'll be notified of these duplicates omitted from mass subscriptions).
  • Mass Removal (be sure to indicate whether you want members notified of their removal from the list)

Non-digest Options

Message header and footers that are included in all email sent to the list can be set here.

Privacy Options

  • Sender Filters
    • Default Member Moderation (this setting determines whether email addresses added to the list should be given unfettered access to post to the list without moderation. For one-way lists, this should be set as "Yes"

Note that messages sent to your list that include bad addresses will bounce back to the list owner for notifications, and after a certain number of bounces will be automatically removed. This gives you the option to correct or ignore invalid email addresses.

Please note that NetMusician list owners will have created for them a test list, in addition to their actual list. This test list can be used to subscribe some test email addresses (such as the list owner's) to experiment with how list options affect email sent to the list.
